The Ridge is a quilted, insulated poncho. Not a fleece throw and not a coat. It goes on over whatever you are already wearing, and it is built for the situations where you are standing or sitting still outdoors and losing heat fast.

What it does

• Quilted hollow-fibre insulation. The same construction idea as a puffer jacket, which is why it is warm without being heavy. The supplier rates the fill as high-grade hollow fibre.
• Full hood. Head and neck are where you lose heat first, and a wrapped blanket covers neither.
• Arm openings. You can hold a mug, a lead, a phone or a set of tongs without the whole thing sliding off your shoulders.
• Zipped chest pocket. Somewhere for a phone and keys that does not involve digging under the whole poncho.
• Light for its warmth. One kilogram, 2.2 lb, for the whole garment.
• Worn over clothing. It goes on top of a coat, not instead of one.
